Catalyst

Oakland Art Gallery, Oakland, California
March 18 - May 3, 2003

zipped (after bn); 60" x 48" x 2"; fabric and zipper, wood stretcher bars; 2000

One of a series paying homage and poking fun of various mid-century and later modernist art movements. The "zip" paintings of Barnett Newman are honored and punctured using this deep red resonant fabric and an actual zipper.

untitled (rothko painting #1), 60" x 48" x 2", cotton, felt and fake fur - 1999

Mark Rothko was similarly honored using the idea of his transcendant doorways using fake fur, brilliant turquoise fabric and felt. A series of drawings utilizing post-its also explored Rothko's sublime doorway.

pop (for yves st. laurent); 42" x 30" x 2"; fabric, pom-poms and thread, wood stretcher bars; 2000

POP! (after JI); 42" x 30" x 2"; fabric, glass buttons and thread, wood stretcher bars; 2000

yves

These three works combine retro fabrics and accoutrements to create formal visual impact (OP + POP). dotty (for grandma d) also pays homage to my grandmother (Dotty) and her love of polka dots; pop (for yves st. laurent) basically honors the amazing fabric designed by ysl adding pom-poms to the tribute; and POP! (after JI) does just that - POP with 60's flower power fabric and antique mirrored buttons as dangly centers.
